Began playing as a nine year old at Birchwood Golf Club, where his father Derek was a founder member.
Turned professional in 1991 and entered the Qualifying School each year between 1994 and 2003, gaining
his card in both 1999 and 2002. Also found his way onto The European Tour through the Challenge Tour in
2004, thanks to a victory that season in the Rolex Trophy. Made the cut in his last six tournaments in
2005 to keep his card. Finished a career high 29th in the 2007 Order of Merit. Achieved two tied
second-placed finishes, in Andalucia’s Valle Romano Open and later in the Mercedes-Benz Championship while
just missed out on a first title, finishing second in the Omega European Masters after a play-off with Brett
Rumford. A fan of all sports and an accomplished snooker player, he is also a keen supporter of Manchester
United. Has been coached by Mark Pearson for the past eight years.

John Letters staff player Phil Archer made a stunning return to form with a fourth place finish at the Italian Open this past weekend. Rounds of 70, 64, 65 and 68 gave a superb finishing total of 21 under par, only four shots adrift of the winner Hennie Otto. With the Irish Open next on the schedule Archer is sure to be fighting the likes of Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke for the top spot!
Returns to The European Tour International Schedule in 2005 having come through the Qualifying School.
Secured his maiden professional victory on the Challenge Tour with success in the 2002 Rolex Trophy in
Geneva in August, a win which spurred him on to finish sixth in the Rankings and secure a place on The
European Tour in 2003. However, he finished the year in 166th place on the Volvo Order of Merit and
played the Challenge Tour in 2004. Coached by Stuart Morgan at the Grove, he still seeks advice from
fellow Yorkshireman and boyhood hero, Howard Clark, now a Sky TV analyst.
